“Stage Fright”
Written by Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon Directed by David Solomon The Story A pop star is in danger from a psycho fan, and her manager is a Dollhouse client. Topher imprints Echo with the personality of a background singer who will instinctively protect Rayna. And, as insurance, they also send Sierra in as Rayna’s number one fan. Echo learns that Rayna is actually in contact with the psycho fan because she feels so trapped by her pop star life that she wants him to kill her. At the same time that she’s learning this, psycho fan kidnaps Sierra, who Echo considers a friend, imprint or not. Echo knocks Rayna out and sets up a hostage exchange type situation. Adelle and Dominic are freaking out a bit over the apparent backfiring of the engagement, but Adelle wants to wait it out. It turns out, Echo was putting Rayna in jeopardy to snap her out of her suicidal funk, and it works! She knocks out the psycho fan, and she and Sierra are ushered back to the Dollhouse for their treatments. Also, Ballard’s Russian contact is actually a doll named Victor, and he was leading Ballard into a trap so that he’d be killed by real Russian Mafia guys and the Dollhouse wouldn’t be implicated. He manages to get away with only a bullet to the gut, and his adorable neighbor Mellie pays him a visit in the hospital. This episode is like 80% irritating Rayna storyline and only 20% interesting stuff between characters we’ll actually be seeing on a regular basis. Boo. The previous episode struck a much more effective balance between the two. Things I Liked
Things I Didn’t
The Characters Echo definitely has protective instincts regarding the people she cares about, and those carry over even when she gets imprinted. Sierra is adorable, and Echo’s protectiveness of her is one of the most interesting things about her right now. Dr. Saunders is getting a little more interesting. She’s definitely holding a lot of bitterness over what happened to her, and she’s very reserved. I like the rapport she’s building with Boyd. Overall Rating 2.5/5
